Stephen Oswald

Stephen Oswald is an American astronaut who was born on June 30, 1951, in Seattle, Washington. Oswald is married and has three children.

Oswald graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1973. He has logged over 7,000 hours of flight time in over 40 different aircraft!

Oswald became an astronaut in 1986. He spent about 33 days in space on three shuttle missions.

Oswald made his first flight as pilot of STS-42 in 1992. This was the first International Microgravity Lab. The crew conducted over 55 experiments on this flight.

In 1993, Oswald piloted STS-56. The crew studied the Earth's atmosphere during this mission. Oswald made his last flight aboard STS-67 in 1995 where he served as commander of the Endeavour flight.

Oswald retired from NASA in January 2000. Oswald is now a Captain in the Naval Reserve and is currently assigned to the Office of Naval Research.
