News story originally written on September 22, 2005
Hurricane Rita is heading towards the U.S. Gulf Coast. Computer model predictions allow forecasters to warn people of the likely hurricane path.
Once or twice daily the Advanced Research WRF model at the National Center for Atmospheric Research calculates a possible track over the next three days for hurricanes near the southeastern United States.
This model, called the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF), is the first computer model designed for both researchers and operational forecasters.
