Several tornadoes hit Arkansas, 24 killed
News story originally written on March 2, 1997
Several severe thunderstorms hit the U.S. over the weekend, wreaking havoc on
the Midwestern and Southern states. Fourteen tornadoes hit Arkansas on
Saturday,
March 1, 1997, killing 24 people and injuring 200. Some of the worst hit places
include Arkadelphia and Little Rock. Over 100 houses were destroyed as well as
several trees and businesses. President Clinton declared a state of emergency,
offering aid to all of the storm victims.
All of the tornadoes struck within a five-hour period. The state had
more tornadoes on Saturday than had occurred all of last year. This is the
worst single-day tornadic event in Arkansas since May 15, 1968, when 45 people
were killed by tornadoes.
Storms also hit the Midwest, killing at least 19 in Kentucky, Mississippi,
Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas.
