El Nino is Brewing Again
News story originally written on September 19, 1997
Scientists have found signs that El Nino is happening. What is El Nino? El Nino is when unusual conditions in the ocean cause weather changes all over the world.
Many people are worried about an El Nino because it can bring very destructive weather all over the world. In the past, El Nino has caused flooding in the U.S. and South America. It has caused severe drought in Australia, Africa, and Indonesia.
El Nino is thought to happen every 2-7 years. It was first named El Nino (the Spanish term for a boy child) because the conditions first happened off the coast of South America around Christmas time, the time when the birth of the boy child Jesus is celebrated.
