Ancient Forest Found in Michigan
News story originally written on February 24, 2000
Scientists found trees buried under sand that are 10,000 years old! They started growing during the ice age. When the climate got warmer, a glacier melted. All the water from it carried sand to the forest and covered it up!
Scientists cut down parts of the trees to study. They can learn about the past by looking at rings that are inside the trees. They had to hold back the water and sand to cut down the trees. But now the water flowed back and the trees are gone!
