The Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Band & Space Weather

Radio Band

Uses

UHF Band
Frequencies: 300-3000 MHz
(1 MHz = 1,000,000 Hz = 1 million wave cycles per second)

TV (Channels 14-83 in US & Canada), aircraft & ship navigation, police and emergency communications

Wave Paths

Effects of Space Storms

Line-of-sight paths are used (limited to ~50 miles). Also satellite links are used for distant communications.

For Satellite-to-Ground Communications: Signal quality is affected by irregularities in the ionosphere which produces phase and amplitude variations in the received signal. Irregularities are enhanced, particularly at polar latitudes, during space weather disturbances.
