Jim Lovell was an American astronaut who was born on March 25, 1928, in Ohio.
Before he became an astronaut, Lovell was a Navy pilot. He has flown
over 5000 hours in several different aircraft.
Lovell became an astronaut in 1962. He was the first astronaut to make
four spaceflights, spending over 720 hours in space.
Lovell made his first spaceflight in 1965, aboard Gemini 7. His second
flight was made aboard Gemini 12 in 1966. In 1968, Lovell piloted man's
first flight to the moon, Apollo 8.
Lovell made his last spaceflight aboard the unlucky Apollo 13 in 1970.
Apollo 13 was the first deep space abort mission. An explosion aboard the
service module forced the crew to use the lunar module as a lifeboat.
The crew returned safely to Earth.
