Frederick Gregory
Frederick Gregory is an American astronaut who was born on January 7,
1941, in Washington DC.
Before he became an astronaut, Gregory was a helicopter rescue pilot
during the Vietnam War. He has flown over 6500 hours in 50 types of
aircraft.
Gregory became an astronaut in 1979. He has spent over 456 hours in
space on 3 spaceflights.
Gregory made his first flight aboard Spacelab 3 in 1985. The crew
performed several tests during this mission. In 1989, Gregory became the
first African-American Shuttle commander aboard STS-33. His crew put a
satellite into orbit. Gregory made his last flight in 1991 aboard
STS-44.
