Pavel Belyayev was a cosmonaut who was born on June 26, 1925, in
Belyayev became a cosmonaut in 1960. He has spent over 1 day in
space on a single spaceflight.
In 1965, Belyayev commanded Voskhod 2. This mission marked the first
human to walk in space, fellow cosmonaut Alexei Leonov. The flight
only lasted a day due to a failure of the automatic guidance system.
Belyayev made a manual re-entry to Earth, causing the craft to land
far off course in the Ural Mountains. Belyayev and Leonov had to
fight off frigid cold and wolves until a rescue team reached them one
Belyayev died in 1970 of a stomach ulcer. A crater on the moon and an
asteroid are named after him.
