Syrtis Major is an ancient, nearly level volcanic plateau along the equator of Mars. The rock in this area is composed of dark minerals such as pyroxene. This image combines a birds-eye view of the surface along with a green line that represents the path of the Imaging Spectrometer flown over Mars. The change in height of the green line below, indicates areas of greater or lesser concentrations of pyroxene.
