Los Angeles Heading for the Hills

Scientists have found that Los Angeles is moving toward the San Gabriel
Mountains at about one inch every five years.
They took the measurements with a new satellite network called the
Southern California Integrated Global Positioning System Network
(SCIGN). The SCIGN uses 24 Global Positioning System satellites to
locate different stations on the ground. Right now there are about 60
stations in the Los Angeles area. They hope to add more stations until
they have 250!
The satellites can tell if the stations move by less than half an inch!
By looking at where the ground is moving, scientists can tell where
earthquakes are more likely to happen.
