The growth rings of an unknown tree species, at Bristol Zoo, Bristol, England. This trunk is three feet (1 metre) across. Notice that the rings are not uniform in width. This image also shows that a tree ring consists of two layers - a light colored layer which grows in the spring and a dark colored layer which forms in late summer.
