Joan Durrance
Joan C. Durrance holds the rank of Professor at the University of Michigan School of Information and Libraray Studies where she teaches and conducts research in public libraries, community information networking, access issues, the reference interview, government information, and evaluation. Durrance is the 1996-97 President of the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE). She has authored more than fifty articles and three books on public library services, access issues, community and information needs. She is one of several investigators on the
Windows to the Universe project.
Durrance is also principal investigator for the UM-SI Community Networking Initiative funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. A component of the UM-SI CNI is the Flint Community Networking Initiative developed collaboratively by UM and the Flint Public Library, the Mideastern Michigan Library Cooperative, and community organizations in Flint and funded by the UM-SI CNI and the cooperating libraries as well as by the Apple Library of Tomorrow Program, the Library of Michigan, and LSCA. Durrance spent her 1995 sabbatical conducting research on community networks. In the process she visited community networks in six states.
