This photograph shows many of the 11,200 photomultiplier tubes found in the Super-Kamiokande neutrino detector. On November 12, 2001 an explosion damaged almost all of the tubes. Photomultiplier tubes record flashes of light when a proton passes through a tank of water. The detector is located in the Kamioka Mozumi mine, Japan.
