- Within the Sun, the sound speed increases as you move radially inward. This increasing sound speed refracts sound waves that are traveling towards the center and forces them to travel outwards again.
- The sharp drop in density at the solar surface causes outward traveling waves to be reflected from the surface and travel back down into the interior of the Sun.
- Long wavelength sound waves penetrate to deeper regions in the Solar interior than short wavelength sound waves. Short wavelength waves have shallower paths and encounter the surface more frequently.
- The density and temperature variation within the solar interior determines how the waves are refracted.
- Observations of these sound waves can be used to obtain information about the structure of the solar interior.
