Bruce McCandless

Bruce McCandless was an American astronaut who was born on June 8, 1937, in Massachusetts. Before he became an astronaut, McCandless was a flight instructor for the Navy. He has logged over 5200 hours of flight time in several aircraft.

McCandless became an astronaut in 1966. He has spent over 312 hours in space on two spaceflights.

In 1984, McCandless became the first person to make an untethered spacewalk aboard the shuttle Challenger. Using a manned maneuvering unit (MMU), McCandless flew 320 feet away from the shuttle. In 1990, McCandless made his second flight aboard STS-31. The crew deployed the Hubble Telescope during this mission.

McCandless left NASA in 1990.
