Tamara Jernigan

Tamara Jernigan is an American astronaut who was born on May 7, 1959, in Tennessee. Before she became an astronaut, Jernigan worked as an astronomer at Rice University.

Jernigan became an astronaut in 1985. She has spent over 1227 hours in space on four spaceflights.

In 1991, Jernigan flew aboard STS-40. The crew performed several experiments in medicine. Jernigan made her second spaceflight in 1992 aboard STS-52. The crew deployed a satellite and conducted several experiments in geophysics.

In 1995, she flew aboard STS-67. The crew made observations of deep space objects. Jernigan made her last flight in 1996 aboard STS-80. The crew deployed and retrieved two satellites during this mission.
