A comet or asteroid hit Jupiter in July 2009. It exploded in Jupiter's atmosphere near the planet's South Pole. This picture shows Jupiter in infrared "light". The place where the comet or asteroid hit is near the lower left corner of this picture. You can also see Jupiter's Great Red Spot at the far right edge. This picture was taken by the Keck telescope in Hawaii.
