William Shepherd

William Shepherd is an American astronaut who was born on July 26, 1949, in Tennessee. Before he became an astronaut, Shepherd was a Navy SEAL.

Shepherd became an astronaut in 1985. He has spent over 440 hours in space on three spaceflights.

In 1988, Shepherd flew aboard STS-27. This was a Department of Defense mission. Shepherd made his second flight aboard STS-41 in 1990. The crew deployed the Ulysses spacecraft. Ulysses went on to study the Sun.

Shepherd flew aboard STS-52 in 1992. The crew conducted several experiments during this mission. Shepherd is currently training in Russia for the International Space Station.
