Jerry Ross
Jerry Ross is an astronaut who was born on January 20, 1948, in Indiana.
Before he became an astronaut, Ross was an Air Force pilot. He has
logged over 1800 hours of flight time in 21 different aircraft.
Ross became an astronaut in 1980. He has spent over 850 hours on 5
spacecraft. He currently holds the record in Shuttle history for
performing over 23 hours of spacewalks.
Ross made his first spaceflight aboard Mission 61-B in 1985. He made two
six-hour spacewalks during this mission. In 1988, Ross flew aboard
STS-27. The crew deployed a satellite and Ross made an unscheduled
spacewalk.
In 1991, Ross made his third spaceflight aboard STS-37. He made two
spacewalks totalling 10 hours during this mission. Ross flew aboard
STS-55 in 1993. The crew conducted over 90 experiments in life sciences,
material processing, physics, robotics, and astronomy.
Ross made his fifth spaceflight aboard STS-74 in 1995. The crew docked
with the Russian Mir Space Station for 8 days. In 1998, Ross will fly
aboard STS-88. He is scheduled to make 3 spacewalks during this mission.
