David Hilmers is an American astronaut who was born on January 28, 1950,
Before he became an astronaut, Hilmers was a Marine pilot. He has logged
over 1000 hours of flight time in several aircraft.
Hilmers became an astronaut in 1980. He has spent over 493 hours in
space on four spaceflights.
Hilmer made his first spaceflight aboard Mission 51-J in 1985. This was
the maiden voyage of space shuttle Atlantis. In 1988, he helped deploy
the Tracking and Relay satellite during STS-26.
In 1990, Hilmers flew aboard STS-36. A CIA satellite was deployed during
this mission. Hilmers made his last flight in 1992, aboard STS-42. This
was the first flight of the International Microgravity Spacelab.
Hilmers left NASA in 1992 to pursue a career as a medical doctor.
