This is a false-color image of an aurora seen on the night side of Jupiter. The Galileo spacecraft produced the original images used to create this one. This image shows important aspects of the size of the aurora. As on Earth, auroras on Jupiter result from electrically charged particles striking the magnetosphere of the planet. The original image was created April 2, 1997 with the Solid State Imaging (SSI) system.
