Irish Chronicles Document Links Between Volcanoes and Weather

A study of over 40,000 written entries in Irish Annals and ice core measurements shows a strong correlation between the occurrence of volcanic eruptions and extreme cold weather in Ireland over a 1200 year period. Data analyzed in this study cover the period from 431 to 1649, during which time up to 48 volcanic eruptions are identified in Greenland ice core records through deposition of volcanic sulfate in annual layers of ice. You can find the study (open access), published on 6 June 2013 in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters, at http://iopscience.iop.org/1748-9326/8/2/024035/article. Atmospheric CO2 Level Tops 400 ppm

During the week of May 13th, the CO2 level at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii topped 400 ppm repeatedly. Daily levels of CO2 can vary due to weather, and there are seasonal trends as well. The level of atmospheric greenhouse gases continues to increase, now over 120 ppm since the Industrial Revolution began. For more on the Keeling Curve, see http://keelingcurve.ucsd.edu/. Windows to the Universe Institutional Partnership for Education and Outreach

Windows to the Universe Institutional Partnerships are designed to provide an even more cost effective approach for an organization with multiple scientists interested in using Windows to the Universe as an education and outreach tool.  Institutional Partnerships include the opportunity for two of the institution's staff to be trained and supported in using the website for education and outreach activities as a Contributing Partner. These staff will be able to promote the institution's resources and programs through the website and its associated newsletters, as well as integrating products for sale associated with its programs in the website online store. This class of partnership can be used to promote multiple programs at the Partner institution.

The fee for Institutional Partnerships is $10,000 per year.  More detail on Institutional Partnerships, and the benefits they provide, is available at www.windows2universe.org/institutional_founding_partnership.pdf.  A representative of an organization interested in becoming an Institutional Partner should complete our Partnership Application Form, and we will be back in touch with you within a few days.

We look forward to serving you, and helping to draw attention to your organization, resources and programs. Please note that, in order to maintain the quality of our publications, our staff will examine the information you provide about your organization's activities, programs, and resources to ensure that these are relevant and appropriate to our audience and our organization. Scientists and organizations interested in establishing partnerships with our organization should be in touch with Dr. Roberta Johnson at rmjohnsn@nestanet.org or 303-929-1606. Final decisions on relevance and appropriateness are made by NESTA and Windows to the Universe staff.
