It's About TIMED - MLTI Image

Click for full size
The TIMED mission will focus on the least explored region of the Earth's atmosphere - the mesosphere, lower thermosphere and ionosphere (MLTI region). This region is highlighted on this graphic. A comprehensive study of the MLTI region has never been done before. Ground-based instruments can only observe a small area of upper atmosphere at a given time. The region is too high for balloons to reach and sounding rockets that do fly into this region fall down within a few minutes so they only provide a brief look at the upper atmosphere near the rocket.
