Are Ultraviolet rays killing fish?
News story originally written on March 18, 1997
According to an Associated Press report, scientists have found
evidence that ultraviolet (UV) rays are causing damage to the DNA of fish.
DNA are things that make up every living thing.
Scientists have found that algae are not growing normally.
Algae are tiny little plants that are at the base of the food chain. In
addition, scientists have found damage in the eggs of icefish in Antarctica.
The damage occurred when the ozone hole was at its peak.
Ultraviolet rays come from the sun and is a type of light that can cause you to
get a sunburn if you stay out in the sun too long. The ozone layer protects us
from most of the sun's UV rays. However, some UV rays manage to push through the
ozone layer. Due to the ozone hole and the thinning of
the ozone layer in past years, more UV rays are reaching the Earth's surface.
