This is a drawing of the Earth's magnetosphere. The lobes are highlighted in yellow. Of course the lobes would extend far down the magnetosphere.
The lobes of the magnetosphere are a vast region of the magnetotail between the magnetopause and the central plasma sheet. The lobes have opposite magnetic direction. In fact, if the plasma sheet didn't separate them, they would come into contact and mutual annihiliation should occur.
