Oxidation Weathering

The transformation of lower oxides into higher oxides accompanied by the attachment of oxygen. Works for elements that are easily connected with oxygen such as iron, sulfur, and manganese. In general, the process of oxidation of sulphides can be expressed by the reactions:


where R is a bivalent metal. A more specific example is the chemical decomposition of pyrite:
