This garter snake was found in April in mid-Maryland during a hike in the woods. The snake was sufficiently startled by humans in the area, that it immediately struck this defensive pose to look as threatening as possible. Garter snakes are not venomous, but are fairly feisty, and this one struck at the camera shortly after this.
