Sensors on satellites can detect chlorophyll. Scientists use this information to measure the amount of plankton in ocean waters. This helps them know which parts of the ocean have many living creatures and which parts have relatively few. This image shows chlorophyll concentrations during the northern hemisphere's winter, which is summertime in the southern hemisphere. The data for this image came from NASA's SeaWiFS satellite.
