Oceans and Seas

Most of the world is covered by water, and most of this water lies in the oceans . Seas are smaller bodies of salt water. The oceans play a major role in weather and climate. The water takes in heat from the sun and passes it around the world through currents. An ocean current is a stream of water moving through the ocean.

Oceans and seas supply most of the water that evaporates and then falls as rain in the water cycle. They are salty while rivers and lakes are freshwater. People have used t he sea for food and transportation for thousands of years.

There are five major oceans. The Pacific Ocean is the largest and covers almost half the Earth. The Atlantic is the second largest ocean. The largest sea is the South China Sea.

Oceans and Seas

About 70% of the world is covered by water, and 97% of this water lies in the oceans and seas. The oceans have a major effect upon the weather, a nd they moderate the world's climate. For example, water absorbs the sun's heat near the equator and surface currents distribute it around the Earth warming the air and nearby landmasses in winter and cooling them in summer.

There are five major oceans. The Pacific Ocean is the largest and covers almost half the Earth. There are few major rivers flowing into the Pacific Ocean because it is surrounded by mountain ranges. The Atlantic is the second largest ocean and many larg e rivers flow into the Atlantic carrying sediment from land. The largest sea is the South China Sea.
