On the fourth orbit around Jupiter, and the first encounter with Europa, scientists got the first pictures which began to tell the story. Using all the collected photos, geologists have broken the surface of Europa into 7 different kinds of surfaces. Here is one of them.
The picture shows something called "linea", which refers to the giant cracks or ridges on the surface which were first observed by the Voyager mission. In this picture, another character of these features can be seen. The ridges extend out in all directions, but sometimes they come as double or even triple bands which run parallel to each other.
