Exploratour - Water on Mars
Water Cycle of Earth
On Earth water is a resource which recycles between different forms of water such as snow and ice, rain, clouds, rivers, lakes, etc. Water destined for the sea is stored in lakes. Water is carried to the sea by rivers. Water which evaporates from lakes, rivers, and other areas of the surface, forms clouds from which rains fall. This process returns water to the surface. The cycle is illustrated in the drawing to the left.
Parts of the water cycle include: atmospheric water, clouds and storms, precipitation and evaporation to and from the surface, transport of water across the surface in the form of rivers, collected reservoirs of still water, like a lake, and an environment where the temperatures are warm enough for water to move between these reservoirs in a short period of time.
We have talked about the first part of this cycle, and shown that there is little water vapor present in the atmosphere. We will next discuss weather fronts, storms, and rain on Mars.
