Windows to the Universe original
Since the beginning of the Windows to the Universe website in 1995, we have records of the number of visits to the website from around the world. Early on, we noticed that there was an annual cycle to visitorship, with a minimum during the summer, a gradual rise in August, a peak in the Fall followed by a sharp drop in December. Visitors come back even more frequently in the Winter and Spring, dropping back in June once again. This pattern of visitorship strongly suggests that many of our users are associated with the school calendar in the Northern Hemisphere. However, as you'll notice in the graphic, the number of visitors to Windows to the Universe has increased substantially since the project started.
The September 11, 2001 attacks in New York caused a reduction in traffic growth that lasted about a year. In 2004, when we opened the Spanish version of the website, traffic increased dramatically - and interestingly - more than normal growth and the addition of visitors to the Spanish site would predict! When you and your students visit the site during the school year, you can be assured that ~50,000 or more other learners are visiting the site, too!
